A much healthier alternative to the traditional rava based upma, the Jowar Upma is made by replacing a large quantity of the refined semolina with fibre and iron rich jowar and green peas.
Ingredients (Serves 2)
1/2 cup jowar (white millet) flour
1/4 cup semolina (rava)
2 pinches mustard seeds
1 tsp urad dal (split black lentils)
1 pinch hing
3 to 4 curry leaves
1/2 cup finely chopped onions
1/2 cup (cauliflower, capsicum, tomato, french beans)
1/4 cup boiled green peas
1 medium green chilli
2 tbsp finely chopped coriander
salt to taste
Lemon juice (as per taste)
2 tsp oil
2 cups boiling water
- Heat the oil in a deep non-stick pan, add mustard seeds and urad dal. Adding asafoetida (hing) and curry leaves to it.
- Now add onions, other vegetables and green chillies, saute for few minutes.
- Once onion turns transparent, add semolina and jowar flour. Again saute for a while till raw smell disappears. Put salt, coriander to the mixture.
- Add 2 cups boiling water to the mixture. Mix well. Cover with a lid and let it cook for 2 minutes. Serve hot.
