About the Recipe

A much healthier alternative to the traditional rava based upma, the Jowar Upma is made by replacing a large quantity of the refined semolina with fibre and iron rich jowar and green peas.

Ingredients

1/2 cup jowar (white millet) flour
1/4 cup semolina (rava)
2 pinches mustard seeds
1 tsp urad dal (split black lentils)
1 pinch hing
3 to 4 curry leaves
1/2 cup finely chopped onions
1/2 cup (cauliflower, capsicum, tomato, french beans)
1/4 cup boiled green peas
1 medium green chilli
2 tbsp finely chopped coriander
salt to taste
Lemon juice (as per taste)
2 tsp oil
2 cups boiling water

Preparation

Heat the oil in a deep non-stick pan, add mustard seeds and urad dal. Adding asafoetida (hing) and curry leaves to it.

Now add onions, other vegetables and green chillies, saute for few minutes.

Once onion turns transparent, add semolina and jowar flour. Again saute for a while till raw smell disappears. Put salt, coriander to the mixture.

Add 2 cups boiling water to the mixture. Mix well. Cover with a lid and let it cook for 2 minutes. Serve hot.
